the kilometer show (day six)
Last stop, New Orleans!
Each drive after Houston isn’t as long. The hike to New Orleans should’ve been about 5 hours, which I was happy about since the day before felt like a final boss level. Thankfully, this day would be simpler. The roads would rise and fall like waves. The trees slowly developed a personality I’ve only read in children’s books or seen in fictional movies. Approaching bridges of such length, gave me the impression I was nearing the famous city, as the lower portion of Louisiana is filled with swamps and small lakes.
And what a fascinating city it is. I think of Vegas and Europe in the south when I can finally see it all. I pass the massive Superdome making my way toward the La Quinta, downtown. I quickly drop off my things and proceed to Jamnola, an exhibit showcasing local artists’ work. As I explore it, I’m given great context of New Orleans’ finest by the host/exhibit guide. I met a really cool couple from Atlanta that I got the chance to connect with by the end of the tour. We had an intricate conversation about black citizens in the United States and how its government has created systems to keep us in a box.
I proceeded to Frenchmen Street and ate at Willie’s where the Cajun Catfish was amazing. I had that with fries, a biscuit, a slushy tequila drink. The customer service was great. I caught a live show where the venue (The Spotted Cat Music Club) was so packed, people crowded the entrance just to see the band play. The band there, performed covers of acts like Anita Baker, Gnarls Barkley, and Maze.
I saw the French Quarter, riddled with bars, nightclubs, and street performers. A Sunday on this street is pretty packed actually. From outside, I saw people in bars singing karaoke, people taken away in ambulance trucks, drummer bands, guitarists playing on top of vehicles, and people on balconies watching it all from above. I didn’t have the interest to stay any longer than what a glimpse would serve me, though, I am looking forward to returning to such a vibrant place and eating the food.
